Open Payments

Open Payments is a CMS national disclosure program. It publishes a searchable database of payments and other transfers of value that reporting entities — including drug and medical device companies — make to covered recipients such as physicians and teaching hospitals.

The short answer

Search a doctor, company, or teaching hospital at OpenPaymentsData.cms.gov (opens in a new tab), or download the datasets there. CMS publishes the data once a year, on or by June 30, for the previous calendar year. CMS notes it does not comment on whether a relationship is beneficial or a conflict of interest — the data is open to interpretation.

The annual cycle (CMS)

  1. Jan 1 – Dec 31

    Collection

Reporting entities record payments to covered recipients, plus ownership or investment interests held by physicians or their immediate family.

  2. Feb 1 – Mar 31

    Submission

Reporting entities submit the prior year’s data to CMS.

  3. Apr 1 – May 15

    Review and dispute

Covered recipients have 45 days to review records attributed to them and dispute any with the reporting entity. CMS does not mediate.

  4. May 15 – May 30

    Corrections

    Reporting entities correct disputed records.

  5. By June 30

    Publication

    CMS publishes the data.

What is in the data

Open Payments groups records into research payments, general payments (such as food, travel, consulting, and speaking), and ownership and investment interests. CMS reported that Program Year 2025 data included 17.07 million records totalling $14.67 billion. The data reflects what reporting entities attest to; a record is not a finding of wrongdoing.

Common questions

Who is a covered recipient?
CMS describes covered recipients as physicians and certain other practitioners and teaching hospitals. Ownership interest reporting applies to physicians and their immediate family members.
Can a doctor correct their Open Payments record?
Yes. Covered recipients can register to review and dispute records during the annual April–May review period; disputes are resolved with the reporting entity, not CMS.
